The Art of Prompting

Prompting is more than just asking AI questions — it’s about guiding thinking, shaping ideas, and empowering authentic learning.

This page showcases how educators and researchers can use prompting as a tool to spark reflection, improve writing, and design meaningful assessments in the age of AI. Built from the ground up through real classroom experience and continuous experimentation, “The Art of Prompting” represents the core of Prompt Academy’s innovation — where AI literacy meets pedagogy.

Discover frameworks, strategies, and ready-to-use prompts — all designed to help you interact with AI meaningfully, ethically, and effectively.

Prompting Techniques at a Glance

While there are many other prompting strategies available, these seven have consistently delivered the best results in Dr Sue’s teaching, writing, and coaching practices. They are practical, easy to adopt, and powerful enough to spark meaningful engagement with AI — especially for educators and researchers just getting started.

🟢 Basic Techniques

  • Zero-shot prompting: Asking the AI without giving any examples.
  • One-shot prompting: Giving one example to guide the AI.
  • Few-shot prompting: Providing several examples to improve response accuracy.

🔵 Advanced Techniques

  • Role prompting: Assigning the AI a specific role to guide tone and context (e.g., “Act as an academic writing coach”).
  • Purpose prompting: Clearly stating your goal so the AI can align its response to your intended use (e.g., “I want to use this for a postgraduate workshop”).
  • Chain-of-Thought (CoT): Encouraging step-by-step reasoning to solve complex tasks.
  • Prompt chaining: Linking multiple prompts to refine output or deepen thinking over time.
