What Does It Mean to Be AI-Aware?
AI-aware isn’t just about allowing AI — it’s about understanding, guiding, and maximising its potential in education, ethically and responsibly.
This mindset goes beyond AI-proofing. Instead of blocking AI, we ask:
“How can we help learners become wiser than the machines they use?”
Why AI-Aware Matters Now
The rise of tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude has reshaped how students think, write, and learn. Educators everywhere are trying to keep up. But while some ban AI, we lead it.
- Integrating AI into meaningful learning.
- Encouraging critical and reflective thinking.
- Designing authentic, values-based tasks.
- Building ethical, confident users — not just rule-followers.
Applications of AI-Aware Thinking
1. In Assessment
- Use AI as a starting point, not the endpoint.
- Focus on originality, interpretation, and real-world thinking.
- Leverage AI-aware rubrics to evaluate beyond surface-level answers.
2. In Academic Writing
- Encourage responsible co-writing with AI.
- Guide students to reflect, cite, critique, and reframe.
- Shift from “catching AI use” to training scholarly voice.
3. In Teaching Practice
- Use AI to design, differentiate and challenge.
- Model how to prompt ethically.
- Make AI part of learning, not a threat to learning.
How This Movement Started
This approach is rooted in real Malaysian classrooms. Through my work at UiTM, and with educators nationwide via Prompt Talk and Prompt Academy, I’ve helped hundreds move from resistance to confident, value-driven innovation.
From AI-aware assessments to academic writing and workshop series — this isn’t theory. It’s happening.
“I’m not afraid of AI. I’m afraid our students will grow up with no compass, because we refused to guide them.”

Before AI-Aware became a full movement, here’s where we started.
Our Early Focus: Responsible AI Use in Teaching and Prompting
Here’s where our journey began.
Prompt Academy’s AI Trainings started as a safe space where teachers and educators could learn to lead AI — not fear it.
We introduced ideas like:
- Designing assessments that promote real thinking, not just AI-generated answers.
- Using prompting techniques to get the best from tools like ChatGPT.
- Applying AI responsibly in teaching, learning, and research.
Here, we’ve always believed:
AI isn’t the enemy. It’s a tool. It’s a partner. It’s an opportunity.
This foundation has now evolved into our broader AI-Aware mindset — a more holistic vision for how AI can shape teaching, writing, and assessment for the future.
